The Product

The Atmocean pump converts kinetic energy of surface waves to upwelling. The pump consists of a buoy and cable inside of a flexible tube open at the top, both attached to a heavy rigid base and valve.

Stored, the tube is “spooled up” on the buoy. The pump is deployed by simply dropping in the ocean. The heavy rigid base sinks and water pressure opens the valve, filling the tube. A recovery cable is attached to the base. In some applications, the pump is activated/deactivated by remote control. On wave down-slopes the valve opens, and cold water enters the base. On wave up-slopes the valve closes and cold water is pulled upward. Over time the cold water reaches the top of the tube and merges with surrounding water, providing the desired reduction in sea surface temperature while delivering deep ocean nutrients to the surface.
